2015 Legal Ethics CLE Course for Legislative Lawyers (and Paralegals)

2015 LEGAL ETHICS CLE COURSE FOR LEGISLATIVE LAWYERS

ETHICS AND THE LEGISLATIVE LAWYER MCLE COURSE TO BE HELD TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2015, 9:45 am to 12 noon, IN THE CAPITOL EXTENSION AUDITORIUM

For those not familiar with the capitol, the auditorium is in the Capitol Extension (the underground part) just across the seal court from the Capitol Grill (aka, the cafeteria), which makes it convenient for those who would want to attend the CLE and get some lunch.  (http://www.tspb.state.tx.us/SPB/Plan/FloorPlan/Exten1.htm)

Parking is available in the parking garage behind the Texas State Library, which is just east of the capitol building on the capitol grounds (http://www.tspb.state.tx.us/SPB/Plan/Parking.htm); parking is free for the first two hours, but charges accrue for each half-hour afterward. (If NCSLers come, they’ll likely be parking at UT, which is where the rest of the NCSL Conference is held, so I don’t think that will affect parking availability.)

This year, the legislative council’s annual legal ethics course will be conducted in conjunction with the Professional Development Seminar being held in Austin by the Research and Committee Staff Section, the Legal Services Staff Section, and the Legislative Research Librarians Staff Section of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).  So, this year we will be joined by a number of attorneys and other professional legislative staff from other states.

As always, the council’s legal ethics course is open without charge to all attorneys and other personnel in the legislative branch, as well as paralegals outside the legislative branch.  Attorneys from other offices who wish to attend will be registered conditionally and may attend to the extent space is available.  Just as in previous years, we expect that we will not have to turn away anyone interested in attending.

The course, titled "Ethics and the Legislative Lawyer," will cover selected legal ethics and professional responsibility topics with emphasis on issues affecting in-house counsel generally and lawyers serving in government and the legislative branch in particular.  Written materials will be included that should be sufficient to provide at least one hour of additional self-study MCLE credit in legal ethics.

The Ethics and the Legislative Lawyer course has been accredited for two hours of participatory MCLE credit in legal ethics/professional responsibility by the Minimum Continuing Legal Education Committee of the State Bar of Texas.

To register, please email Thomas Kelly in the TLC Legal Division at thomas.kelly@tlc.state.tx.us.  You will receive a confirmation of your registration and periodic updates and reminders after we receive your registration request.  Direct any other questions to Jeff Archer at 463-1155 or jeff.archer@tlc.state.tx.us.  If you are registered for the full NCSL Professional Development Seminar, please include that information in your email.
